All the basic knowledge to design the rotor of a horizontal axis wind turbine and match it to the generator is now available in the report KD 35 published by Kragten Design.

The rotor design theory was established and developed by the former Dutch organisation CWD (Consultancy services Wind energy Developing countries), in the period from 1975 until 1990. The matching theory was developed by the Dutch engineering office Kragten Design, in the period from 1990 until 1999. The general aerodynamic knowledge about horizontal axis wind turbines is given first, followed by the rotor design theory and a simple theory to estimate the rotor characteristics. Next the influence of yawing of the rotor on the rotor performance is given. This knowledge is important if the windmill has a safety system which turns the rotor out of the wind.
