The Global Wind Summit, the biggest event of the year for business and networking

The Global Wind Summit, to be held in September in Hamburg this year, will be the biggest and most important meeting of the wind industry worldwide. It combines the wind industry exhibition WindEnergy Hamburg with the global conference WindEurope to create a platform for business, networking and information for the onshore and offshore wind industry. These two events will be held side by side from 25 to 28 September 2018 at the Hamburg Messe site. At the WindEurope 2018 Conference, more than 500 speakers and presenters will inform the attendees about every aspect of the wind industry in 2018. At WindEnergy Hamburg, covering nine exhibition halls, more than 1,400 exhibitors from 35 countries will present their product innovations and customised solutions for the wind industry, and the expected number of visitors is more than 30,000. This year, the exhibition focuses on three major subjects: dynamic markets, cost-efficiency and smart energy.

Dynamic markets
The exhibition will include 22 national and regional pavilions from 13 countries. A total of 14 national delegations from various African and South American countries as well as China, Japan, Taiwan, India, Iran and European countries including the Benelux countries, the UK and Poland have announced their attendance. The South American countries are great examples of dynamic growth markets for wind energy. The opportunities presented by Argentina’s forthcoming third auction round will be highlighted by the planned side event ‘Onshore Wind in Argentina’. Taiwan offers an offshore wind development potential of 5500MW between now and 2025, and the country is considered to be probably the most mature market in Asia that is accessible to international companies. Even the so-called ‘sleeping giants’, including Russia, the world’s fourth-largest energy market, or Saudi Arabia, which has announced plans to expand its installed renewable energy base to a total of 9,500MW by 2023, will be on the agenda for the Global Wind Summit.

Cost-efficiency
In recent years, increasing pressure to drive down wind turbine manufacturing prices has spurred enormous advances in technology. For example, turbine and rotor sizes have grown and many other innovations have enabled significant improvements in terms of energy output and cost-efficiency. During the event the industry will demonstrate and discuss what can be achieved by current and emerging technologies.

Smart energy
Exhibitors and presenters will highlight the future of wind energy production, its integration and storage, as well as sector coupling projects, from advanced concept studies to smart turbines, rotor blades, and control systems. Smart energy extends to the digitalisation of supply-chain processes, the use of big data for asset upkeep, smarter O&M, midlife upgrades, and lifetime extension.

Hack the Wind returns
InnoEnergy, supported by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology, and WindEurope will host a joint hackathon for a second consecutive year. Hack the Wind aims to help shape the future of wind energy by facilitating the development of innovative new technologies. The hackathon will be held throughout the first two days of the WindEurope Conference. More information about the hackathon can be found in the View from Inside on page 29 of this issue.
