Setting Goals …

The year 2006 started with a battle between Russia and Ukraine about supplying gas to the latter. Whatever the reason, and without taking a position on who is right or wrong, the dispute showed the dependency of the international energy market on countries that possess fossil fuels such as gas. Because of the conflict, Russia decreased the amount of gas sent to Ukraine, an important hub for the distribution of gas to Western Europe, and several countries suffered problems due to halving of the gas supply. Such situations could be an opportunity to get renewable energy higher on the international political agenda, although our industry still faces the opinion that the majority of consumers are not willing to pay more for renewable energy compared to fossil energy. There are two main goals I would say: increase the public awareness of renewable energy’s importance and make sure that it becomes competitive!

We at Windtech International also set our own goals. Although we are a new publication, we have already established a strong and growing qualified readership. Windtech International is distributed in 75 countries and, after just one year, already 28% are individual qualified readers. It is our goal to increase this number to at least 50% during 2006, by inviting our readers to renew their subscription. Make sure you fill out your details to ensure you continue your free subscription. Of course, we intend to continue to bring you interesting and innovative information with a technological focus from the industry. As always, we are open to any suggestions or remarks you may have. Please let us know what you think.

In this issue we present to you a new concept for renewable energy generation, the Atmospheric Vortex Engine. The atmospheric vortex is capable of generating electricity from solar radiation and the atmosphere. The process has strong similarities to other existing renewable energy generation technologies (the solar chimney and wind turbines). The concept involves creation of a controlled vortex, allowing the energy from the atmosphere to be converted into mechanical work, which can be captured by turbines and converted into electricity. Although additional development is required before constructing a full-scale vortex power plant, the process has the potential to generate large amounts of renewable energy. More on the concept can be found on page 29.

Let me end this publisher’s note with the most important thing: my best wishes for 2006. I hope it may bring health and prosperity for you and for your families.
