Communication for the electricity industry Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 July 2008
To operate a stable European electric grid, standardized cross-border and multi-manufacturer communication is required. The Bachmann electronic MMS server allows a standard-compliant data interchange across modern TCP/IP networks.

The real existing parts of a system, such as transformers, switches, etc. are modelled in the IEC61850 standard. Since additional conditions, data objects and access services were required for wind power, the wind power standard IEC 61400-25 was introduced on the basis of IEC 61850, describing corresponding specializations and extensions. Bachmann electronic decided on the MMS (Manufacturing Messaging Specification) protocol, which offers the best coverage of the abstract services from IEC 61580 and IEC 61400-25. The MMS server of Bachmann electronic is started as a software module on an M1 controller and communicates outwards the variables available in the application programs on the control. Whether a device is represented according to IEC 61850 or IEC 61400-25 with the MMS server is up to the decision of the system manufacturer.
