Building on the success of their collaboration on the ReLACs project (retrofitted lidar assisted control using a simplified wind turbine lidar solution – Wind Energy Science Conference 2023, ZX and sowento have embarked on a further, new initiative to demonstrate the benefits of ZX Continuous Wave (CW) Lidars for Lidar Assisted Control (LAC). The initiative will explore the commercial gains that LAC needs to provide, the ways in which ZX CW solutions can meet those gains and the robustness and sensitivity of the predicted ZX CW LAC cost-benefit. The defined project scope will cover a broad range of turbine segments including onshore, offshore and floating turbine systems, all of differing rotor sizes, and for both standalone turbines and wind farm accumulated benefit.

Independent renewable energy developer, Akuo show the value in using wind Lidar to support wind resource assessment campaigns and accelerate their global development plans. 10 years since their purchase of a ZX 300 wind Lidar (Lidar #334), the Lidar unit continues to support global renewable energy developments. Throughout its lifetime Lidar #334 has operated in a wide range of conditions and terrains. Yet #334 has not been subject to any country-specific alterations – instead, it is the same one Lidar for all climates that has allowed it to be truly autonomous in eight countries..and counting.

The largest body of evidence of any Remote Sensing Device, comparing the device’s performance to an IEC met mast, has been released by ZX Lidars. The evidence summarises 500 individual ZX 300 ground-based vertically-profiling wind Lidar unit Performance Verifications undertaken the UK Remote Sensing Test Site against an IEC compliant met mast.
ZX 300 uniquely measures wind characteristics from just 10 metres and up to 300 metres above ground level. The results show that ‘out-of-the-box’, a ZX Lidar’s performance demonstrates very high availability across all heights measured, very high accuracy when compared to an IEC compliant met mast and a robust, consistent measure of Turbulence Intensity.

Fred. Olsen Renewables has contracted wind resource campaign management specialist ZX Measurement Services (ZX MS) to support their expanding onshore wind development activities in Scotland. ZX MS has now completed a 12-month comprehensive wind measurement campaign, using two ZX 300 wind Lidars at the proposed Scawd Law Wind Farm. Helen Thrasher, Head of Technical at Fred. Olsen Renewables commented: “At Fred. Olsen Renewables we believe in a 'wind first' approach to development – ensuring our wind farms are designed to make the most of the onsite wind resource. To achieve this, it is imperative that we have high quality data measurements from the site. Deploying Lidar technology at Scawd Law allowed us to collect this vital data from several locations across the complex site, surveying up to our estimated tip height of 180 m, with the expert support of ZX MS throughout the campaign.”
