An enormous 500 GW of wind energy is available in South East Europe, a potential currently not being realised. Speaking at a Central and South Eastern Europe Connectivity (CESEC) ministerial meeting in Sofia, WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson gave four recommendations to help the region unlock this vast resource. The CESEC group gathers governments from South East Europe to discuss energy issues.

European countries gave their endorsement to a binding EU-wide renewable energy target of 32% for 2030. They confirmed a deal on the Renewable Energy Directive, which negotiators from the Council and European Parliament reached on 14 June.

Up to GBP 2 million of funding to encourage innovation in the offshore wind sector and reduce development costs has been announced by the Scottish Government. The funding is targeted at supporting innovation across the sector to reduce long-term costs, improving health and safety standards, and widening educational opportunities within the industry.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the selection of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to administer an US$ 18.5 million offshore wind research and development (R&D) consortium. NYSERDA is partnering with the Carbon Trust and The Renewables Consulting Group (RCG) in the development of the Consortium, which will further be supported through a public-private partnership including the offshore wind industry, utilities, research laboratories, and other states.
