Europe added a record 15.7GW of new wind energy capacity in 2017, according to WindEurope’s annual onshore and offshore wind statistics. New wind farm installations were up 20% on 2016 and beat the previous 2015 record of 12.8GW. Onshore wind capacity grew by 12.5 and offshore wind by 3.1GW.

The overall capacity of all wind turbines installed worldwide by the end of 2017 reached 539,291MW, according to preliminary statistics published by WWEA. 52,552MW were added in the year 2017, slightly more than in 2016 when 51,402MW went online. This is the third largest number ever installed within one year, after the record years 2015 and 2014. However, the annual growth rate of only 10,8 % is the lowest growth ever since the industrial deployment of wind turbines started end of the 20th century.

The Indian government has invited tenders for 2,000MW of wind power projects connected to the inter-state transmission system. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) would sign 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the winning bidders and sell the power to electricity distribution utilities.

2017 was a record year for offshore wind in Europe according to statistics released by WindEurope. Europe installed 3.1GW of new offshore wind, taking total capacity to 15.8GW, an increase of 25% in just one year. 13 new offshore wind farms were completed, including the world’s first floating offshore wind farm, Hywind Scotland. The UK and Germany accounted for most of them, installing 1.7GW and 1.3GW respectively.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has announced on Wednesday that his state will move ahead with 3,500MW of offshore wind by 2030. He directed the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to establish an Offshore Wind Strategic Plan focusing on job growth, workforce development, data collection, and protection of offshore natural resources.
