Reaching for the higher winds
The hub heights of onshore wind turbines are shooting up to elevations of 100 metres and more in order to reach more consistent and faster winds and so produce more energy than is available at lower heights. In order to harness this higher grade energy, wind turbine towers must evolve to reach new heights. Many towers, and especially those of 100 metres and more, are nowadays made from concrete. However, this market is being constrained when it comes to increasing tower height because of the limited availability of the powerful cranes needed to erect such tall towers.
Esteyco, from Spain, has now developed a system of constructing very tall towers that avoids the need for these large, ‘heavy-lift’ cranes. The key to the process is the use of high capacity lifting jacks instead of high capacity cranes. According to Esteyco, this system, because it can be easily deployed in a modular form, will have virtually no limitation on the height of the tower or the size of the turbine that can be installed. The reusable hydraulic jacks are easily transported from one tower to another. The company also states that the system can be used both onshore and offshore.
