Sowitec trading GmbH has successfully registered a so-called CDM programme of activities (PoA) for wind energy projects in Uruguay. A PoA is an opportunity for renewable energy projects that reduce greenhouse gases to access the European carbon market (EU-ETS).

By participating in the Sowitec-PoA, wind farms in Latin America can obtain CO2 certificates which can be sold to companies or countries with climate protection goals such as under the Kyoto Protocol, providing an additional cash inflow to the project. The first wind farm participating in Sowitec’s PoA is project Castillos Norte. It will be built near the village of Castillos in the southeast of Uruguay and will comprise 27 wind turbines, summing up to a total installed capacity of 81MW.
