New Website On-line

Since the early days of generating energy by wind power it has been a goal to increase the amount of energy generated. Over the years, manufacturers have developed bigger turbines with more capacity. The top five manufacturers seem to have a race to have the biggest turbine in the marketplace. The 5MW turbine from REpower, with a height of 120 metres, is the biggest turbine operational at present.  I am sure the competition will follow.

This is the goal of EU Energy and Shriram, who recently set up a joint venture to acquire DeWind from FKI. It is expected that the complete takeover will be completed in mid April. It is their intention to invest in the current product line and not enter the market for large-scale turbines, since they take the view that they are a supplier for a niche market instead of a high volume manufacturer. Windtech International had the opportunity to interview Michael Porter from EU Energy. On page 7 you can read the reasons behind the acquisition and how the companies foresee the future.

Before I became the publisher of Windtech International I was active in the field of geospatial information (in short, measuring the Earth). Most people don’t realise that geospatial information touches almost every part of daily life. It is also relevant for the wind energy industry. One of the disciplines within geospatial information studies is measuring the Earth from space using satellites. This technique could be helpful, especially for offshore wind farms. With a technique called scatterometry, measurements of wind vectors over water can be taken remotely by orbiting satellites. On page 18 you will find an in-depth article about this topic.
