The DecomBlades project has created a new specification for recycling partners to recycle blade material, the so-called Product Disposal Specifications. The new specification will help industrialising the blade recycling industry.
 
The Product Disposal Specifications were developed by mapping out the composition of the blades of Siemens Gamesa, LM Wind Power, and Vestas. Once mapped, the data has formed the base for a standardised recommendation for blade disposal specifications, which includes what materials are used in the blades and where they are situated. This makes it is easier for recycling companies to separate the blades and recycle the parts.
 
The project consortium consists of Ørsted, FLSmidth, HJHansen Recycling Group, LM Wind Power, Makeen Power, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy A/S, Vestas Wind Systems A/S, The Technical University of Denmark (DTU), The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and Energy Cluster Denmark. It runs until 2024 and has a total budget of DKK 40 million. The project has been co-funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark.
 
The DecomBlades project focuses on three processes: Mechanical grinding/shredding of wind turbine blades so that the material can be recycled in various products and processes, the use of shredded blade material for cement production and a method for separating composite materials under high temperatures, also known as pyrolysis.
