President Joe Biden has committed to cutting U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030 compared with 2005 levels.

The 50%-52% reduction would nearly double the nation’s previous commitment, from the Obama administration. It also makes it more likely the U.S. can meet its mission of net zero emissions by 2050. Biden made the announcement official as he convenes a virtual Earth Day summit for 40 world leaders Thursday morning, through Friday. The pledge would help align the US with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
