The Queensland government has given development approval for a wind project of up to 1,200MW that will be located in state pine forest in the Wide Bay-Burnett region.
The project developed by Forest Wind will consist of up to 226 turbines and would be located in state forest used as pine plantations between the towns of Gympie and Maryborough. Construction is proposed to commence between the end of 2020 and 2022 and the first stage of the project is expected to be operational by late 2023. The wind farm, which is valued at around $2 billion, could increase Queensland’s installed power generation capacity by approximately nine per cent. Forest Wind is a joint venture between Siemens Gamesa and Clean Sight.
