Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and Norwegian petroleum and energy minister Kjell-Børge Freiberg opened the Arkona offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea in Mukran on the German island of Rügen today.Arkona is operated by the Germany company E.ON in collaboration with Equinor. Arkona started its power supply to the German national grid in September 2018, and its 60 wind turbines, each producing 6MW, reached peak production in 2019. The wind farm has a total capacity of 385MW.
Chantiers de l'Atlantique, through its Atlantic Offshore Energy Business Unit, designed, built, installed and commissioned the electrical substation for the offshore wind farm. The substation consists of a topside 50 metres long, 35 metres wide and 15 metres high. Chantiers de l'Atlantique also provided the foundation for the substation, a 53-metre high jacket structure with a total weight of 1,800 tonnes.
E.ON awarded Van Oord the contract for the transport and installation of the 60 monopiles and transition pieces in 2016. Heavy-lift installation vessel Svanen completed these works in 2018.
