A new facility enabling wind turbine induction generators to be comprehensively tested at ground level has been unveiled on Merseyside this week.
The test bed in action Liverpool-based Rewinds & J Windsor & Sons (Engineers) Ltd. is believed to be the first company in the UK to offer an effective solution to the long-standing problem of testing the mechanical and electric reliability of induction generator units before they are re-fitted to their elevated working position. Using in-house skills, the company has designed and constructed a special rig currently enabling generators of up to 1MW to be thoroughly tested following repair or refurbishment. With some minor modifications this rating can be upgraded. The generators undergo a series of ground level tests including stator and rotor current measurement, as well as temperature, and vibration monitoring. Wind farm developers and operators B9 Energy has been one of the first to benefit from this solution. The Windsor team is currently exploring the development of pioneering electronic rotor current control systems. |
